Massachusetts Bay Colony was established in 1630 by Puritans headed by John Winthrop. The Exodus story is very important for Winthrop to ensure the peaceful formation of this new religious colony. Puritans believed in pure religion which was focused on individual salvation but for a colony to thrive, it’s important that people worked together and the only way to ensure that Puritans worked together was to give them reasons. Thus, Winthrop in his sermon has focused on God’s rules and laws necessary for the development of a society into a prosperous one.
